Manipur Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai on Saturday urged the Union Home Ministry to set up a regional facility in the North East for disaster management and mitigation.
The Minister was speaking during the third session of National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) 2023 chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted that all the North East states are facing serious problems of remoteness and inaccessibility and also underscored the need for better technical and professional support for disaster risk reduction.
He pointed out that the Northeastern states are prone to earthquakes and landslides and investment in capacity development for responding to the health hazards as well as mitigating them is highly required.
He further drew the attention of the Union Home Minister and National Disaster Management Authority to provide necessary funding for the engagement of staff or consultants as a hundred percent central sponsored scheme.
He also expressed gratitude to the Government of India for considering the implementation of a larger national initiative in landslide and earthquake risk mitigation.
