A Driver said, "If drivers were to stop working for just one month, the entire state would face hardships."
The Manipur Driver Association celebrated the 36th Manipur Driver’s Day today calling on the state government to introduce a special pension scheme for drivers in recognition of their sacrifices.
The drivers have long been serving the state, often under challenging and hazardous conditions, and are now demanding government support for their welfare.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, a driver highlighted the numerous hardships faced by those working on the highways.
He shared that drivers endure harassment from various sources and face life-threatening situations daily, yet receive little respect or support from the government.
The driver emphasized the vital role they play in the state’s functioning stating, “If drivers were to stop working for just one month, the entire state would face hardships.”
He said that many drivers have tragically lost their lives in accidents and while facing crises on the highways. “Since we are the sole bread earners for our families, if we die or become unable to work, there should be a pension to support our families, ensure children’s education, and help with daily expenses,” he said.
In addition to their plea for a pension scheme, the association has also called for the public to show greater respect for drivers.
On the occasion of Driver’s Day, many families, drivers, and other stakeholders gathered at the Manipur Press Club and paid floral tributes to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
