Even as combing operations have started, unidentified gunmen killed three people and injured two in Kangpokpi early Friday morning

Violence in Manipur is refusing to die down. Today is day 36 of unrest in the northeastern state. Barely couple of days after combing operation was started in New Keithelmanbi areas of Kangpokpi district, gunmen opened fire and killed three people including a 70-year-old woman. Two people have been injured in the firing that took place in Khoken village in New Keithelmanbi area under Kangchup Geljang Sub Division of Kangpokpi. The incident took place at around 3:30 am Friday morning.

Vehemently condemning the incident, the Committee on Tribals Unity, Sadar Hills Spokesperson, Rev. K. Sitlhou termed the violent incident as an “extremely tragic” incident.

He said that despite the enormous effort on the part of the Government of India to cease violence in the state, Manipur is still witnessing an escalation of violence. People are indulging in killing and arson.

The firing incident has come within hours of the attack on the residence of MLA Soraisam Kebi in Imphal East. Two bike-borne miscreants hurled a low-intensity Improvised explosive device (IED) at the gate of the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa BJP MLA.
