Jailbreak in Mizoram: 5 Myanmar nationals escape from Lunglei district jail

Five prisoners, including three convicted criminals escaped from the Lunglei District Jail in south Mizoram early morning today.

As per inputs, the inmates, all are Myanmar nationals managed to escape the jail by breaking a wall of a toilet of their ward in the jail.

The escapees are–Lalchawimawia(24),Lalbawihliana (27), Dokapthang (26), Haudeihchhin (25) and Vanneihthanga (38).

Lunglei district jail superintendent Zosanga said that the prisoners escaped between 1.30 AM and 2.15 AM.

The inmates of Ward No. 2 went over 20-foot barriers with 15-foot barbed wire on top and broke the bricks inside the toilet, said Zosanga.

Lalchawimawia(24) was recently convicted for murdering a 49 year-old woman with machete after robbing her in Lunglei.

Four other escapees were arrested for possessing or trafficking heroin from Myanmar and were booked under the Narcotics Act.

Apart from Lalchawimawia, Lalbawihliana and Vanneihthanga had been undergoing jail terms after being convicted by courts while Dokapthanga and Haudeihchhin are under trial prisoners.

Meanwhile, a massive manhunt has been launched by the Police to nab the escape prisoners.

Police said that that the escaped prisoners might be dangerous.

There are seven duty posts along the prison walls, but only three of them are manned by the Mizoram Home Guards personnel leaving 4 duty posts unmanned and idle due to shortage of manpower.

As per sources, aecurity lapse has been reported in the jail management due to shortage of manpower and vehicles.
