HM Amit Shah inaugurates & lays foundation of projects worth over Rs 2400 crore; bats for peace and development; reiterates commitment to develop NE

Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was on a day-long visit to Mizoram today, inaugurated and laid foundation stones of several welfare projects to the tune of Rs 2,415 crore. Among the key projects inaugurated include, Assam Rifles Battlion headquarter complex at Zokhawsang. Besides, the Home Minister also laid the foundation of the Laldenga centre.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah highlighted on the Centre’s commitment to ensure large scale development in the Northeast as well as Mizoram. In this connection, Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision and Mission for making this a reality.

Shah said,”Narendra Modi government has increased the budget for the northeast region by 276% under PM-DevINE. All 8 state capitals of the region will be connected by air, rail and road before 2025.”

“Once there was violence in Northeast triggered by rebel groups, and there was lack of rail, road and air connectivity and there was no sign of any development. But in the last 9 years, with the efforts of PM Modi and the GoI alongwith the cooperation of the people of NE, we were able to bring back peace in NE, enhanced connectivity and have succeeded in bringing development in Northeast which is at par with the rest of the nation,” Shah said.

Not only this, the Union Home Minister also highlighted about Mizoram’s journey so far from when once the state was facing violence and unrest. Amit Shah said,”At one time there was unrest and violence here, but today Zoramthanga is the CM of Mizoram, this is an example of democracy in India. Today, there is peace here.”

Besides, Amit Shah also urged upon the misguided youths to shun the path of violence and return to mainstream. Shah said,”I appeal to all armed groups in the Northeast to join the mainstream, become a part of the democratic process and give their contribution in the development of the region and the country.”

The Union Home Minister stated that over 8,000 cadres of rebel outfits have surrendered in past nine years and there was 67% decrease in incidents of violence in the region in comparison to 2014, whereas there was 60% decrease in deaths of security personnel. Simultaneously, there was 83% reduction in deaths of civilians in terror-related violence in the region, the union Home Minister added. In this context he referred to the peace accords signed by the Centre with the NLFT in Tripura in 2019, Bodo Accord in Assam 2021 and also the Karbi Peace Accord signed in 2022.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also pointed out that there has been 70% reduction in areas under the ambit of AFSPA in the last 9 years.

After laying the foundation stone of 4 key road infrastructure projects valued over Rs 1400 crore, the Union home minister said that it will serve a big purpose, especially when it comes to trade and commerce. Shah said,”When completed, these would lead to increased trade and business not just within Mizoram but also between the state and neighbouring Myanmar.”

The roads to be constructed are:
Zorinpui – Longmasu NH-502A at an estimated cost of Rs 781.85 crore
Construction of Aizawl Bypass (Package-1)
NH-6 worth Rs 329.70 crore
Construction of Aizawl Bypass (Package-3), NH-6 worth Rs 720.72 crore

“Our Prime Minister is fully committed to development of Northeast. This is evident from the fact that he visited Northeast 53 times after becoming the Prime Minister and is the first among any of the Prime Ministers to do so,” Shah further said.
