Assam Govt employees to get 2-days additional leave to spend time with parents, in-laws

February 9 and 10 will be special casual leave for MLAs, ministers and state government employees to spend quality time with parents and parents-in-law

Continuing with the efforts to ensure that people spend time with their parents and in-laws, the Assam government has announced this year’s special leaves for state government employees on February 9 and 10, 2023 to spend quality time with parents, in-laws, and other family members and take care of them.

The initiative of granting additional casual leaves to state government officials, employees, ministers, and MLAs was started by Himanta Biswa Sarma after he took over as the CM in May 2021.

The initiative is part of the ‘Matri-Pitri Vandana’ scheme ( ‘worshipping mother-father) introduced by the Himanta Biswa Government.

The special casual leaves are also available for the MLAs, and ministers in the state.

“Feb 9 to Feb 12 will be special casual leave for Mins/MLAs & state govt employees to spend quality time with parents & parents-in-law,” CM Sarma tweeted.

To provide government employees with a long break, two-day leave has been given on Thursday and Friday, just before the second Saturday and Sunday of this month. Last year, this special casual leave was given on January 6 and 7, 2022.

However, the scheme is not applicable for employees who do not have parents/parents-in-law or for “personal merriment”.

The state government introduced the scheme last year to ensure that government employees get time to be with their parents and parents-in-laws. Mostly government employees have their parents who live outside of Guwahati or in villages and because of the busy schedule and limited holidays, they barely find time to spend with their parents. Sometimes government employees, particularly police personnel, work on holidays like on Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2), etc.

“Blessings of parents are essential in our lives. as an ideal citizen, ensuring the well-being of our parents is our responsibility.” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
