In a significant move ahead of the Bihu festivities in Assam, the authorities in that state are taking measures to enforce a complete ban on the manufacture and sale of power-loom-produced traditional handloom textiles, particularly the gamocha.

In this regard, the handloom department conducted a series of raids at Golaghat in Assam on Monday.

Notably, the move follows after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s directive to put a complete ban on power-loom-produced Gamocha and Mekhela chador, among other products.

Meanwhile, the scientists in Assam have developed unique software that can detect whether a product is handmade or power-loom-produced using artificial intelligence.

The software will enable users to identify power-loom-produced products with the help of their mobile camera lenses.
