Today marks the 574th birth anniversary of Assam’s legendary Vaishnav philospher-saint Srimanta Sankardev.

Vaishnav Satras and Naamghars across the state are observing the pious occasions with Naam-Kirtans and other cultural activities.

Some of the major Vaishnav Satras like those in Barpeta, Batadrawa and Majuli would be holding special Naam-Kirtans and other cultural programmes to mark the occaison.

Meanwhile, people in Kamalpur today took out a special procession in the morning hours to mark the occasion.

The procession also saw a special performance by local Ankiya Naat actors who enacted scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata in the traditional Ankiya Naat style that is associated with Srimanta Sankardev.

Th Guru’s birth anniversary is also anointed as Shankar Janmotsav.

Srimanta Sankardev was born in 1371 AD in Bardowa, now Nagaon district, and died in 1449 AD.
