Assam: After misplacing dead body, GMCH now mixes up babies

First Published: 4th May, 2023 20:00 IST

As per reports, the hospital management handed over a newborn girl in place of a baby boy to a family

First, they misplaced a deadbody. Twenty-four hours later, today, doctors at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the premier medical institute of the region goofed up again. They handed over a baby girl instead of a baby boy to the new-born’s family.

Why and how did this happen?

GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sharma had this to say. “It was a mistake from the doctor’s side while writing. The mother gave birth to a baby girl, which was handed over to the family. However, mistakenly, the doctor wrote male instead of female. The child was handed over at night. In the record, it is also very clear that during handover, it was written baby girl. If they (family) saw it was written male in the paper, they should have come to the doctor instead of going to the press.”

While Dr Sharma said that it was done to sensationalize the matter, the family of the newborn created a scene at the hospital but the issue was later sorted.

Yesterday, authorities of the GMCH morgue handed over the body of a woman identified as Lakhimi Chetri to a Jorhat-based family, while Lakhimi’s young son was desperately looking for his mother’s body.
