Are women really safe in Assam? Despite strict laws in place to deal with crimes against women and the government and police administration best efforts, safety of women in the state continues to be a cause of grave concern.

At least 10 incidents of spine chilling crimes against women have been reported from the state since June 29 till date, which definitely has raised grave concern. Rape, murder, molestation, blackmailing of women gives a clear indication that a lot still needs to be done for the safety of women in Assam.

August 7- A horrifying incident came to light when a woman was blackmailed, abducted, raped by 3 perverts who had captured a video of her taking a bath. Things did not end there as accused Ariful Islam got hold of this intimate footage and began blackmailing her, exploiting her vulnerability and extracting both money and compliance from her family by threatening them that if they did not comply he would make the video public.

As the victim’s family grappled with the ordeal, matters took a sinister turn when Ariful Islam and two accomplices abducted her. The trio held her captive in a secluded area known as the Ghulai Forest, where the victim endured a series of violent and traumatizing events. Over a period of five excruciating days, she was subjected to relentless acts of molestation and rape. The case is now in the court.

AUGUST 2- The rape of a 12-year-old girl in Assam’s Dima Hasao, triggered massive protest with women groups taking to the streets seeking justice for the victim. The incident occurred on July 28, but came to light only on August 2 in the vicinity of a bamboo factory at Manderdisa in the district. Accused Raja Das is now already behind bars.

The miscreants, armed with sharp weapons, forcibly entered the girls’ house and took both of them.

JULY 20- The Cachar Police solved a complex murder mystery and arrested the accused involved in the murder of an 18-year-old girl. The victim’s acid burnt body was found in an under-construction building. The arrested accused, a jilted lover identified as Pinak Sukhlabaidya strangled the victim to death on July 15, the day she had gone missing. “A love triangle was the reason for the disputes between the two, for which she met with an unfortunate death,” Cachar SP Numal Mahatta had informed Northeast Live.

JUNE 29- Shocking to say the least, two Assam Police officers – one Sub Inspector and an Inspector, have been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl and taking her obscene photographs inside the police station. The accused police officers have been identified as–Vishal Kashyap, Sub-inspector and Inspector Biman Roy of Ghograpar Police Station in Assam’s Nalbari. On June, 26, a 17-year-old girl lodged an FIR with the Nalbari Police against the Sub-inspector accusing him of clicking her nude pictures and sexually assaulting her inside the police station on June 21, 2023.

These incidents depict a clear picture that more needs to be done to stop crime against women. Police action in nabbing the culprits has been prompt enough but maybe its time for the government and the police to think of ways to put a stop to such acts of crime against women.
