Arunachal players clinch gold at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023

Boni and Golom won gold medals in the U-21 and U-17 categories respectively

In a proud moment, two weightlifters from Arunachal – Boni Mangkhia and Golom Tinku have clinched gold medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023, held in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Boni and Golom won gold medals in the U-21 and U-17 categories respectively.

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated the players and wrote, “The joy of double win! Our talented sportspersons are making #ArunachalPradesh proud in Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023 being held at Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Boni Mangkhia & Golom Tinku clinched Gold medals in U-21 & U-17 categories respectively. You are true inspiration. Keep it up!”

Earlier, Boni Mangkhiya had set a national record by lifting a total of 171 kg (73 kg in snatch and 98 kg in clean and jerk) in the 55 kg body weight category and won two gold medals in the National Youth Weightlifting Championship in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

In 2020, Mangkhiya clinched a bronze medal in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

In the same year, Mangkhiya won a silver medal at the third Khelo India Youth Video Games held in Guwahati, Assam.

Similarly, Golom Tinku won a bronze medal at the IWF World Youth Championship held in Durres, Albania on March 26 this year.
