Conjunctivitis outbreak in Mizoram: Over 3000 cases in 13 days, capital Aizawl worst hit

The prevalence of Conjunctivitis commonly known as Eye Flu has reached alarming proportions in Mizoram. The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that over 3000 cases have been reported in just a span of 13 days.
As per the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), 3,036 cases were reported during September 4 to 16 in the state.
Reports quoting NPCBVI state programme officer Dr. Biaksiami said that while people with eye issues thronged out-patient departments (OPDs) of hospitals in Aizawl and other places since the second week of August. However, the numbers have declined during mid-September.
As per the NPCBVI official, the highest number of cases-2262, during September 4 to 16 has been detected in capital Aizawl. Mamit district has the second number of highest cases 669 followed by Kolasib district with 174 cases.

As per data available with the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI) Mizoram was comparatively safe from Conjunctivitis in July when neighbouring states were already hit. However, the endemic situation began from early August and spread like wildfire from mid-August.
