Manipur violence fallout: Mizo MPs want to snap ties with NDA

First Published: 25th July, 2023 19:07 IST

The 2 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Mizoram have expressed their desire to pull out from NDA upset over NDA’s handling of the Manipur situation

Two Members of Parliament from Mizoram C. Lalrosanga (Lok Sabha MP) and K. Vanlalvena (Rajya Sabha MP) have expressed their desire to pull out from NDA, but are waiting for nod from the Mizo National Front (MNF) leadership, over the issues of Manipur violence and Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“We cannot be on the side of injustice, and we can, perhaps, no longer continue to be in the NDA. Of course, that is for my party (MNF) leadership to decide but I do feel like that. By and large that is the public sentiment,” Lalrosanga said.

He said that the sentiments of the people of Mizoram, his constituency, are with the Manipur tribal community as they are the kindred brothers of the Mizos.

“At present, through the MNF party I represent, I am an alliance partner of the BJP led NDA, that’s a fact. The state government in Manipur is a BJP government, which is supposed to be our ally, failed to quench the violence against the tribal people,” he said.

Either Chief Minister N. Biren Singh should resign or the state be placed under the President’s rule immediately, the lone Lok Sabha member from Mizoram opined.

Lalrosanga won the Parliamentary polls in 2019 on MNF ticket which is the BJP-led NDA ally as well as the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

The lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram K. Vanlalvena also echoed the opinion of Lalrosanga, saying that it has become more and more embarassing to be the constituent of the NDA.

Vanlalvena, however, said that the decision to continue in the NDA or opt out from the alliance will have to be made by the MNF party leadership and that he aired his own personal opinion.

The two MPs from Mizoram were indirectly told not to raise the issues of Manipur violence and the UCC in the meeting of the NDA representatives finally resulting in the duo skipping the NDA MPs meeting on Thursday.
