Tangkhul Nagas of Manipur ‘Blood brothers of Meiteis’ : NNPGs

First Published: 1st July, 2023 16:16 IST

In a sharp attack on the NSCN-IM, the NNPGs said the Tangkhul leaders in the group have started the chorus of separate flag and constitution

Amid the turmoil in Manipur, the NNPGs and the NSCN-IM are engaged in a bitter war of words in total disregard of the September 14, 2022 joint accordant whereby the two groups had promised to work together and desist from all forms of violence, including violence of words through print and social media.

In a statement on June 25, the NNPGs had described the Tangkhul Nagas of Manipur as ‘blood brothers of the Meiteis’ who together have once again vowed to preserve the territorial integrity of Manipur. The NNPGs said in a statement that Article 371 (A) of the constitution which is in force in Nagaland recognises the Nagas of Nagaland as the sole owners of their land.

The NNPGs said this ownership privileges cannot be extended to th’e NSCN-IM leaders Th. Muivah, Rh. Raising or anyone from Manipur irrespective of how they imagine themselves vis-a-vi land and people.

In a sharp attack on the NSCN-IM, the NNPGs said the Tangkhul leaders in the group have started the chorus of separate flag and constitution, elements that define absolute sovereign nations, perhaps realising they won’t benefit from the Nagaland state.

The NSCN-IM has joined issue with the NNPGs and has issued a statement on June 28, accusing the NNPGs of being frustrated and exposing their helplessness in continuing the Naga Political Struggle of which they are not in control. The NSCN-IM said if the national struggle was turning out to be too heavy for the NNPGs to carry on, they could make an exit and leave the struggle to bona fide national workers.

Now the big question is whether the fresh difference between NNPGs and NSCN-IM could pose a serious roadblock to the Naga Peace process as and when it gathers momentum once again.
