Sikkim: 14,000 mothers to receive financial assistance of Rs 20,000 in Rangpo today

The Sikkim government, continuing its effort to empower women in the state, has decided to provide annual financial assistance to 14,000 mothers across the state under the “Sikkim Mother Empowerment Scheme,” launched on the initiative of Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
At the end of the government’s month-long Door to Door program, a check will be handed over to all the mothers in the closing programme to be held in Rangpo today.
In the first phase of this scheme, assistance will be provided to more than 14,000 women from 32 constituencies. The mothers will get financial assistance worth 20,000 rupees per year.
However, several criteria have been set for women to avail the benefits of this first-of-its-kind welfare scheme for women in the country. Only mothers above 18 years of age will be eligible for this scheme, adding there should not be any government employee in their family.
Mothers who are unemployed or who have no means of income or who live alone will also be included in this scheme.
Similarly, women victims of sexual exploitation and unmarried and widowed mothers will also receive financial assistance through this scheme.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang led the SKM government in 2019 and announced this scheme with the aim of empowering the unemployed mothers of the state and connecting them to the mainstream of society.
Giving special importance to this scheme, the Chief Minister said that financial assistance is being provided to more than 14,000 mothers in the first phase.
No caste, religion, class, or party has been taken into account in the selection of the beneficiaries of the scheme and it has been implemented after testing and approval from various levels.
The Chief Minister has also indicated to increase in the number of beneficiary mothers and the amount of assistance in the second phase of the scheme.
In accordance with the plan, women who are the head of the household will get this incentive, while in accordance with the criteria of the plan, the households in which no member has a permanent government job, diverse women, POCSO victims, women from BPL families will get an annual subsidy of 20,000.
