14 organisations from Assam have threatened to launch a mass agitation if the government decides to go ahead with the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The organisations have warned that if the amendment bill is passed forcefully it will lead to widespread mass agitation.
Briefing the media after attending a Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the Bill, the organisations said that the proposed Bill to grant citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshis is totally unacceptable to the ethnic communities and the people of Assam.
The proposed Bill violates the very idea of secularism, they said. The organisations said the Bill be withdrawn to respect the historic Assam Accord.
