Chief Ministers of Assam & Meghalaya Chief Ministers held a crucial meet in Guwahati on the inter-state border dispute between the two states. The meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma at State Guest House Koinadhara discussed the reports submitted by the respective Regional Committees formed on the border dispute.
Speaking to the press after the meeting Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong termed the meeting to be positive and productive. He also informed that both Assam and Meghalaya governments have resolved to solve majority of the six areas of dispute taken under phase I.
It was decided in the meeting that both the governments will meet again before the 16th of January to further discuss the matter. The regional committees who have not submitted their reports yet have been asked to submit latest by December 31st.
It may be mentioned that Assam and Meghalaya have identified six areas of dispute to be resolved in the first phase. Out of the three regional committees in Meghalaya, 2 have submitted their report, while the government has asked the third to submit its report at the earliest.
The two Chief Ministers had made a joint visit to Langpih recently as part of a goodwill gesture to send across a strong message that both the governments are committed to resolving the long-pending border differences.
Preparing ground for an acceptable resolution to the dispute, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma had recently held a mega consultative meet with pressure groups and MDCs of district councils to take their feedback on the inter-state border issue. Members of top pressure groups like the KSU, COMSO, HYC among others took part in the crucial consultative meet.
