The Assam government on Friday passed the Cattle Preservation Bill, 2021 banning transportation of cattle from the state and consumption of beef within 5 km distance of temples.
The Bill also prohibits consumption of beef in areas with substantial Hindu population.
The bill was passed in the Assembly even as the opposition Congress and AIUDF staged a walkout over the issue.
In an emotional address to the House, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the new bill had only three points of differences or fresh inclusions when compared to the existing Assam Cattle Preservation Act 1950, which was notified on April 25, 1951.
The new bill prohibits slaughter of cattle outside slaughter houses besides banning transportation of cattle and prohibiting consumption of beef within 5 km of temple premises. It also prohibits consumption of beef in Hindu majority areas.
