Christmas fever gripped the region as people in large numbers thronged the churches and attended midnight mass. Despite the ongoing Covid pandemic, the spirit of Christmas reigned supreme across the region.

Assam along with the other parts of the region celebrated Christmas in a grand way amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All churches have been decked up with flowers and lights.

While in many places Christmas is being celebrated virtually, Guwahati along with other parts of the state is celebrating the festival physically abiding by all Covid protocols.

Prayers are being offered in the churches and people were seen wearing masks, maintaining social distance.

In Shillong, thousands of faithful thronged the churches to attend the midnight mass. People offered prayers and greeted each other after the midnight mass.

The Covid pandemic did not dampen the spirit of Christmas in the pine city where for the first time since the pandemic, people came together to celebrate an occasion together in large numbers. Proper Covid protocols were followed everywhere and special care was taken to ensure there was no laxity in following the guidelines.

Churches in Nagaland were seen packed as people gathered in large numbers to attend the Christmas service in the state capital.

While some churches opted to hold virtual services the church gates were open for those who wanted to attend the Christmas service. Unlike previous years the Christmas services were kept very short due to the ongoing pandemic and maintaining the laid down SOPs.

In Manipur, braving the winter cold, people offered morning services to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at various churches in and around the state maintaining COVID-19 protocols.

Meanwhile, low-key celebrations marked the event with COVID-19 protocols in place across Mizoram. The state government has banned church service, carols, congregational gatherings and all such practices to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

However, defying coronavirus protocols, people had on Thursday swamped markets and malls in Aizawl for pre-Christmas shopping.

Christmas in Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh was also celebrated adhering to Covid safety protocols and health restrictions.

In a year shadowed by the Covid pandemic, spirituality was the healer. This was the common opinion of the citizens as they celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ.
