The delimitation of Assembly constituencies may soon take place in Assam.
According to highly placed sources, the state may soon undergo delimitation for which a gazette notification is likely to be issued at the earliest.
As per the procedure followed by the Delimitation Commission, the Commission will publish its draft proposals for Assam.
According to sources, a stipulated time frame will be given for the people to send their objections and suggestions.
Subsequent to this, public sittings will be conducted by the Delimitation Commission in the state to consider the objections and suggestions received from the public. The draft will be finalized only after considering the suggestions given by the public.
It may be mentioned, that the Centre had deferred the delimitation exercise in January 2008 in the four Northeast states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh due to the prevailing situation at that period of time.
The Gauhati High Court had also stayed the delimitation work in Assam along with Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland on petitions challenging the legality of the 2001 census.
