Huge Cache of Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Mizoram, One Arrested

Assam Rifles in an operation recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives in Mizoram’s Saiha district and apprehended a person on Sunday.

Acting on specific intelligence of movement of arms and explosives through general area Niawhtlang village in Saiha district , Assam Rifles launched an operation on April 6.

During the operation, the Assam Rifles apprehended an individual and recovered 122 detonators, 94 gelatin sticks, eight metres of safety fuze, one 12 bore rifle and ammunition.

As per inputs, the apprehended individual and the recovered items have been handed over to Mizoram Police.

Earlier on February 12, Mizoram Police seized a large cache of sophisticated arms, ammunition and other items from the state’s Lunglei district, which shares a border with unfenced Bangladesh.

Three persons – two residents of Mizoram, and one inhabitant of neighbouring Tripura, who were carrying the arms and ammunition in the car, were also arrested. They belong to the Chakma community. The arrested persons have been identified as Roni Chakma, 45, (Tripura), Anirban Chakma, (34) (Lawngtlai district, Mizoram) and Ribeng, 24, (Lunglei district, Mizoram).

Police recovered two AK-47 rifles, five US-made M4 carbines, 20 magazines, 504 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and 4,675 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition.
