Regional Council Demand Committee Formed to Push for Rights of Indigenous Minority Tribals in Meghalaya

In a significant development, the indigenous minority tribal communities of Meghalaya have taken a stronger step forward in their long-standing demand for a separate Regional Council. A new public body named the Regional Council Demand Committee (RCDC) was officially formed on April 5, during a special meeting held at Babedpara in West Garo Hills district.
The meeting, attended by 54 members, witnessed the unanimous decision to form the RCDC with the sole objective of intensifying the demand for a Regional Council that would safeguard the rights and interests of the indigenous minority tribals living in the state.
The committee appointed Dr. K.C. Boro, former Minister of Meghalaya, as its Chairman, while Ananda Koch took charge as the General Secretary. Promod Koch was named the Chairman of the Advisory Board. Additionally, the committee entrusted the roles of Vice Presidents to Bhabani Hajong, Dharmeswar Koch, Nabin Boro, and Sahadev Rabha. Rupkumar Boro, Ramcharan Hajong, and Sanjay Rabha were chosen as Assistant General Secretaries.
The newly formed RCDC has declared that it will work in close coordination with the Meghalaya Indigenous Minority Tribals Forum (MIMTF), which has already submitted memorandums to the Government of India, the Governor of Meghalaya, and the Chairman of the National Scheduled Tribes Commission in New Delhi, pressing for the creation of a Regional Council.
The MIMTF represents several tribal communities including the Hajong, Koch, Rabha, Boro-Kachari, Mann, and Karbi tribes, who have long felt the need for a separate governing body to preserve their identity, culture, and development needs.
The committee members strongly stressed that the RCDC will function as a public body free from political or party affiliations, and will act purely in the interest of the people.
