Meghalaya: Centre Acknowledges NEHU Crisis, Says VC Removal Not That Simple

Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Mazumdar said that efforts are being made to resolve the crisis at the earliest.

Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Mazumdar has assured that the ongoing leadership crisis at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) will be addressed soon while emphasising that the removal of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla is not that simple.

Speaking to the media, Mazumdar said, “The university is an autonomous institution, and there is a proper procedure for recruiting or removing a Vice-Chancellor. We ca not simply change or remove a VC just owing to demands.”

He further assured that the Government of India is in constant touch with NEHU officials, and efforts are being made to resolve the crisis at the earliest.

The situation at NEHU has been tense since November last year, following widespread protests by students, teaching staff, and non-teaching staff over allegations of mismanagement by VC Prabha Shankar Shukla. Amid a three-week-long hunger strike by students, Shukla was sent on leave, which has now extended for over 87 days.

With the absence of a fully functional Vice Chancellor, three key NEHU bodies-the Teachers’ Association, Students’ Union, and Non-Teaching Staff Association have raised concerns over the university’s administrative paralysis.

In a letter to Acting VC Prof. Nirmalendu Saha, they urged immediate action to convene an Executive Council meeting, warning that failure to do so could lead to further escalations.
