Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted Assam’s growing contribution to India’s energy sector at the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in Guwahati. Speaking on the second day of the event, he stressed that Assam’s role in oil production is steadily increasing, recalling the state’s long-standing history with the Digboi oil refinery, India’s oldest.

“Assam currently contributes 15% of the country’s crude oil and 14% of its natural gas production. This is a very positive indicator, and the state is set to grow further,” Puri said. He said that events like Advantage Assam attract youth participation and create widespread opportunities.

Speaking about the future of clean energy, the minister underscored the importance of green hydrogen. He pointed out that if the cost of green hydrogen can be reduced from $4.45 to $2.50 per kilogram, it would trigger a major revolution in India’s energy landscape. “This transition will shift us from conventional energy to hydrogen, allowing hydrogen-powered buses to operate across the country including the Northeast. The only emission from these buses will be water vapor, making it a game-changer for sustainable transportation,” he stated.

Puri also revealed that India’s Exploration and Production (E&P) sector is witnessing significant momentum. He recently met with key stakeholders, including British Petroleum, who have expressed strong interest in India’s energy sector.

The minister praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his proactive initiatives in boosting the energy sector, assuring that the central government will extend all possible support to enhance Assam’s energy potential.
