Marcuise N Marak Denies Illegal Coal Mining in South Garo Hills Amid Allegations

Despite these assertions, Justice Katakey had instructed Deputy Commissioners to submit data on coal seizures from November to January.
Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2.0 government spokesperson Marcuise N Marak has refuted allegations of illegal coal mining and transportation in South Garo Hills, asserting that no such activities are occurring. His statement contradicts a report by a Meghalaya High Court-appointed committee led by retired Justice B.P. Katakey, which found evidence of illegal coal mining in the district.
“There’s no such illegal coal trade happening on the ground. If there is, systems are in place to catch those involved. Some businessmen have already responded, and the matter has gone to the district administration. In my opinion, there’s nothing illegal happening,” Marak stated.
Defending the government’s stance, he dismissed allegations of state involvement in illegal mining. “Why would the state work in collaboration with illegal activities? The MDA government is transparent, and the Chief Minister’s initiatives speak for themselves. If anyone witnesses illegal mining, they should report it, and we will take action,” he added.
Despite these assertions, Justice Katakey had instructed Deputy Commissioners to submit data on coal seizures from November to January. While most districts reported little activity, South Garo Hills recorded the seizure of over 2,500 metric tons of freshly mined coal. Ongoing patrols have reportedly confirmed continued mining operations.
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has earlier strongly criticised the state government, accusing it of enabling illegal coal mining despite judicial directives.
