Civil Bodies of Mizoram, Manipur And Nagaland Protest Scrapping FMR

Civil bodies across Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland have launched protests against the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of a border fence along the Indo-Myanmar border. The move has sparked strong opposition from indigenous communities, who argue that it threatens their cultural and ancestral ties.
The Zo Reunification Organisation (ZORO) in Mizoram, along with civil bodies from Chandel and Tengnoupal districts of Manipur and the Nagaland Indigenous People’s Forum (NIPF), have issued statements supporting the protest.
ZORO organised demonstrations across multiple locations in Mizoram, including Mimbung, Champhai, Serchhip, Kolasib, Lunglei, and Vaphai, as well as in Chandel and Tengnoupal in Manipur.
During the protests, ZORO officials highlighted concerns over the impact of ending the FMR, stressing that the people on both sides of the border share deep cultural and historical connections. They urged state governments to intervene and push the Centre to reconsider the decision favouring indigenous communities.
Zoro GS, Ruatliana Fanai said, “Our program, organized by the Zoro Unification Organization in Aizawl, Mizoram, was a protest against FMR and border fencing, following a decision by the Zou Reunification Organization Executive Committee. Political parties in Mizoram attended and delivered speeches condemning FMR and border fencing. Similar protests were held in 10 districts in Manipur, including Sandel District. We are grateful for the support of the Nagaland Indigenous Peoples Forum, with whom we’ve collaborated since March 2024. Our co-workers from Tripura also participated, showing solidarity. We are pleased with the unity displayed and the growing support across various regions in the fight against FMR and border fencing.”
The protest culminated in the burning of a government order that mandated the scrapping of the FMR and the border fencing.
