Relocation of Harijan Colony in Shillong: State Government Awaits Defence Ministry’s Nod

This comes after the initial plan for a two-acre site was scaled down, with vertical expansion being considered as a viable solution
The Harijan Colony in Them Iew Mawlong, Shillong, comprising 342 families, may soon relocate to a one-acre plot if the Defence Ministry approves the state government’s proposal. This comes after the initial plan for a two-acre site was scaled down, with vertical expansion being considered as a viable solution.
Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang expressed optimism about the proposal, highlighting the state government’s approach to the Central Government for land allocation near Mawlonghat, an Army-owned area.
The request has been formally communicated to the Defence Ministry, and the government remains hopeful of a favourable response. Despite the reduced size, Wahlang assured that the space is sufficient for relocation.
Stakeholders were consulted in November, with a general consensus on the plan. Importantly, places of worship, including the Gurudwara, will remain unaffected, ensuring a balanced resolution for all parties.
To expedite the process, Chief Minister and Commissioner Secretary (Urban) visited the Defence Ministry in December, emphasising the state’s commitment to resolving the matter. Wahlang affirmed that discussions are ongoing and the proposal is being actively pursued to secure approval from the Defence Ministry.
The final decision, pivotal for the colony’s future, now lies with the Ministry, with hopes pinned on a timely resolution.
