Assam BJP President Ranjit Das has stirred major controversy by saying that it would be ethically correct for alliance partner, Asom Gana Parishad to quit the government and coalition and continue with its protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Speaking to Northeast Live Editor-in-Chief Wasbir Hussain on the show Northeast Tonight, Das said he would not like to go into specifics and would let the AGP take a call on the subject, although it would be morally appropriate for the regional party to be on its own and agitate.
Das said the protest against the Bill is unjustified because it was a hypothetical issue as the legislation has not been brought about.
He said it was incorrect to assume that Hindu Bangladeshis would come in hordes to Assam as there is no reason for them to leave Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, reacting to Assam BJP president Ranjit Das’ remark, AGP vice-president Dilip Bora said, while they are always ready to walk out of the alliance, they are still in it for a purpose.
