The North East Students Organisation today demanded the Centre to implement the National Register of Citizens in the entire region to detect and deport illegal migrants.

The NESO delegation which called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju also highlighted various issues afflicting the region.

Voicing its concern over alleged unabated influx of illegal migrants in the region, the North East Students Organisation on Thursday demanded the implementation of NRC in the entire Northeast to tackle the menace.

Making a special mention of the North-eastern state of Tripura, NESO adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya alleged that of the near 40 lakh population of Tripura only around 10 lakh were indigenous people.

Stating that the situation speaks for itself, Bhattacharya said there is a need for a comprehensive policy to addresses the issue.

Significantly, the Supreme Court has only recently issued a notice to the Centre and Tripura government following the hearing of a plea demanding the implementation of NRC in Tripura.

Meanwhile, the 25-member NESO delegation also called on Union Home minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State for Home Affairs raising the demand for a NRC like exercise in the entire Northeast region as the process is already underway in Assam.

The NESO delegation during their meeting with Rajnath Singh and Kiren Rijiju also reiterated their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill maintaining that the Bill will only protect the interests of the illegal migrants.

Besides this, the NESO delegation also handed over a memorandum to the Home minister seeking Centre’s intervention on special education policy for Northeast, repealing of draconian laws such as the AFSPA turbidity of Siang, India-Myanmar border row in Manipur besides others.

The issue of stapled visa being handed over to residents of Arunachal Pradesh by China was also raised.
