Nagaland: Village Headman shot dead in Dimapur, Dy CM Y Patton orders probe

Condemning the attack in strongest terms, the Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister termed it as an attack on the prevailing peace and security.

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton who is also in charge of the Home Department has ordered a thorough probe into the killing of the Gaon Bura (Village Head) of New Market in Dimapur.

Condemning the incident in strongest terms, the Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister termed it as an attack on the prevailing peace and security.

Taking to X, Deputy CM Patton directed authorities to intiate speedy investigation and wrote, “Saddened and outraged by the tragic assassination of the Gaon Bura of New Market, Mr. Abdul Kayum Talukdar, in Dimapur. This heinous act of violence, which took the life of Mr. Talukdar, is an attack on peace and security in our society. I urge the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. We stand in solidarity with the grieving family and community during this difficult time.”

As per inputs, Abdul Kayum Talukdar, Goan Bura of New Market, Dimapur, was on Friday night shot near Axis Bank ATM booth in Signal Bosti, shaam bazaar area, Dimapur, by unidentified gunmen.

He succumbed to his injuries in Faith Hospital, Dimapur.

Talukdar aged 60, was reportedly shot from a close range by unidentified miscreants around 9:30 pm who had come in a car. The victim received bullet injuries on his chest and was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

If reports are to be believed, the deceased hailed from Assam and his appointment as a non-indigenous Gaon Bura has been a source of controversy since last year.

Groups and organisations had opposed this and called for his removal from the position.

However, an official statement from the police is still awaited.
