The Election Commission of India has appointed Ashish Kundra as the new Chief Electoral Officer replacing SB Shashank.

The development comes after ECI sought names from the Mizoram government to replace the outgoing CEO.

Kundra is currently serving as the Commissioner and Secretary of general administration besides also serving as Commissioner, Technical and Higher Education.

Earlier, the Election Commission in a crucial meeting on Saturday called for a panel of names for the post from the state Chief Secretary.

The ECI had asked for as many as 5 names. Kundra, meanwhile, is yet to confirm his appointment.

Massive protests had erupted in Mizoram seeking removal of SB Shashank for his role in the transfer of Mizoram Principal secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo by the Election Commission of India citing interference in the works of the EC.

Shashank accused Lalnunmawia Chuango, a 1987-batch Gujarat-cadre IAS officer, of making an objection to facilitate voting for Mizoram Bru refugees in Tripura for the upcoming state elections.
