The reports of a youth from Assam joining the dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir had sent shockwaves across the state raising questions on whether a silent radicalization of youths was underway in the state.
While Kamran Uddin may not have been radicalized in Assam but State DGP Mukesh Sahay admitted that some radical activities have been taking place both on the physical and cyber space and it needs to be tackled effectively.
The DGP said this on the sidelines of the Rongali Bihu celebrations organised by the Assam Police especially in honour of the DGP who is scheduled to retire soon.
Talking on the law and order situation in the state, the DGP said Assam is moving towards being a terror-free state. He further revealed that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has set some parameters for the force and the police are taking necessary steps in this regard.
The top cop added that the NRC updation process is progressing smoothly and Assam police is geared up to face eventuality if at all the need arises.
When asked about possible Maoists activities in the state, Sahay said immediate actions were taken in the past by the Assam Police to wipe out the Maoist menace but there is no certainty that it would not resurface again.
He further mentioned that Maoists, through their ideology want to exploit those affected by agricultural and industrial unrest. However, the top cop expressed confidence that if such challenges occur in near future, it will be tackled with proper assistance.
