Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat from Mizoram, K. Vanlalvena has announced the party’s decision to stay in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if elected, but to oppose the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

MNF is an alliance partner of the BJP, both in NDA and the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

Speaking to media in Aizawl, Vanlalvena who is the sitting Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram, expressed his gratitude for letting him serve as Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha MP for three and a half years and said that if elected to the Lok Sabha again this year, he would join the NDA but vehemently oppose the BJP’s plan to transform India into a Hindu nation using the UCC.

Vanlalvena is pitted against Richard Vanlalhmangaiha of ZPM, Congress’s Lalbiakzama, People’s Conference’s Rita Malsawmi and Independent candidate Lalhriatrenga Chhangte, a former BJP and Congress leader.

It may be mentioned here that the Neiphiu Rio-led Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland, National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) and many others have expressed their opposition to the implementation of UCC across India.

The concept of UCC involves the formulation and implementation of personal laws that would apply to all citizens of India, irrespective of their religion, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. At present, personal laws are governed by religious scriptures within various communities.
