The family members of one of the deceased students, Marsu Dubi, gathered today to voice their concerns and frustrations.
The grieving families of students killed in a tragic overhead water tank collapse at St. Alphonsa School in Naharlagun have urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to form a High-Level Committee to investigate the incident and enforce stringent construction standards for schools across the state.
On December 14, three Class IX students, aged between 14 and 15, lost their lives, and two others were injured when a water tank at the school in Model Village collapsed onto them as they played. The victims were identified as students of St. Alphonsa School.
The family members of one of the deceased students, Marsu Dubi, gathered today to voice their concerns and frustrations. They alleged that the tragedy was caused by faulty construction practices that disregarded standard guidelines. They further criticized the quick bail granted to the school’s owner, calling it an injustice to the victims and their families.
“We demand that the school premises be sealed until a full investigation is completed. The safety of children should never be compromised,” one family member stated.
The families also appealed for the school to remain closed permanently to prevent similar incidents in the future. They urged the government to ensure all schools in the state strictly adhere to proper construction standards and safety protocols to avoid such tragedies.
The police have already detained the school’s principal, owner, and four wardens in connection with the incident. Preliminary investigations by the authorities have revealed that the water tank had been filled beyond its capacity, which caused it to burst and collapse.
Naharlagun Superintendent of Police, Mihin Gambo, confirmed the findings, adding, “The tank was poorly constructed and overloaded, leading to the collapse.”
