The tripartite deal will be signed in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi
The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is all set to sign a historic peace deal with the
Centre and the Assam Government in New Delhi on December 29.
The tripartite deal will be signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at 5 pm.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia said that he along with other ULFA leaders met senior officials of the Union Home Ministry today to finalize the date for sigining of the agreement.
Significantly, Chetia said that another round of discussion will be held tomorrow on the content of the agreement.
He, however, said that the leaders are more or less satisfied and hoped for the best agreement.
It may be mentioned here that both Chetia and ULFA foreign secretary Sasadhar Choudhury reached New Delhi on Monday for the talks ahead of the signing of the deal.
The duo is also likely to meet Union home minister Amit Shah before signing of the accord.
Couple of weeks ago, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the tripartite peace agreement with ULFA is likely to be signed this year-end or by January next year.
He said that the final touches are being given to the proposed peace agreement which will incorporate political, economic and cultural safeguards as well as land rights demands made by the group.
In 2011, ULFA submitted a 12-point charter of demands to the government which includes constitutional and political arrangements and reforms, protection of the identity and material resources of the local indigenous population of Assam.
