Tura attack a possible assassination bid on CM Conrad Sangma: Meghalaya DGP

Police has evidence that yesterday’s Tura incident was pre-planned, money was paid to youths to cause physical damage to the CM, even go to the extent of murdering him

In a big sensational disclosure, Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi said that yesterday’s attack was pre-planned and was aimed causing physical damage to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, even go to the extent of murdering him.

“Investigations have revealed that it was a pre-planned conspiracy to attack the Hon’ble Chief Minister and to damage him physically. Clinching evidence have been gathered that money was distributed on July 23 to some of the youths to create violence there on the site. Secondly, on July 23, many liquor bottles were distributed to the youth and many youths came with plastic jerry cans filled with kerosene. They were carrying match boxes, lighters. Tents were pitched. On the spot, they started giving inciting speeches where the Hon’ble CM was abused and threatened. They provoked the crowd to physically cause damage to the Hon’ble CM and they also said they would even go to the extreme step of murder”, the DGP said addressing a press conference in Shillong today.

So far 18 people have been arrested. According to the details shared by the authorities about the arrested people, 11 of the 18 are from TMC and the remaining 7 are from BJP, both opposition parties.

The DGP further informed that 18 persons were injured — 10 Meghalaya police personnel, 7 were from CRPF and 1 home guard. IGP Law and Order has been rushed to Tura.

He said a total of 21 vehicles were damaged of which 4 were burnt down while 17 were damaged due to pelting of stones. Forces have been deployed and night curfew will continue for till further orders.

Violence broke out yesterday evening in front of the CM’s office in Tura after a large number of people gathered outside the Mini Secretariat, gheraoed it and started pelting stones. CM Sangma along with several other officers were stuck for sometime because of the violence.
The mob burnt down vehicles and broke window panes of the Secretariat while CM Sangma was inside.
CM Sangma was in Tura yesterday to meet members of A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) who have been protesting, sitting on hunger strike for several days demanding Tura be declared the winter capital and also review of the Reservation Policy and the Roster System.

CM Sangma had travelled to Tura to meet them and he had held a peaceful discussion with the agitating organisations for over 3 hours at his office in Tura when suddenly the CM came under attack.
