The Meghalaya Government has made significant strides in addressing the long-standing issue of relocating the Harijan Colony in Shillong.
Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar emphasized that the government is actively pursuing a solution, carefully considering the complexities and sensitivities involved. He confirmed that while discussions with the Centre are ongoing, a backup blueprint is in place in case defence land is unavailable for the relocation.
Dhar stated, “As it is a big issue, we are working on it and we will surely resolve it soon. We are very close to the final call.”
Dhar indicated that the government is in talks with central authorities and the defence ministry about the potential allocation of defence land for the relocation. While the government aims to resolve the issue before the financial year ends, Dhar acknowledged that it may not be feasible to achieve this before Christmas or New Year due to time constraints and office closures. A resolution is likely to occur in 2025.
The government’s renewed commitment to addressing the relocation issue signals a focused effort to resolve the matter, ensuring a fair and balanced approach for all stakeholders involved.
