Despite protests, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday announced that the Indian Hotels, Tata group’s hospitality arm that operates the Taj group of hotels, will soon set up a five-star property in Agartala.
Addressing an event of the State Engineers’ Association (SEA) in Agartala, Saha revealed that the proposed hotel will feature hundreds of royal rooms and several exclusive suites, making it an attractive option for international tourists arriving via chartered flights.
With direct employment opportunities for 200 individuals, the venture is seen as a significant economic boost for Tripura.
“We are in talks with Tata Group for setting up a heritage five-star hotel. This will be a gamechanger for Tripura, featuring four to five exclusive royal rooms, each charging around Rs 2.5 lakh per night, attracting high-end tourists arriving via chartered flights,” the CM said.
Apart from these elite accommodations, the hotel will have several other rooms catering to a broader clientele.
Highlighting the potential impact, Saha added, “Tata has a global hotel network, and foreign tourists can come and stay in the exclusive rooms. They won’t just stay at the hotel but will also explore destinations like Narikalkunj, Rudrasagar, Chhabimura, Unakoti, and Dumber Lake.”
However, the CM did not specify the location for the proposed hotel.
Notably, the state government’s previous plan to convert Pushbant Palace—a royal property—into a five-star hotel had faced stiff opposition from its alliance partner Tipra Motha beside Opposition party CPI(M).
Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, the palace had served as the Raj Bhavan until 2018 and was historically significant for hosting Rabindranath Tagore’s 80th birthday celebration in May 1941.
Apart from tourism initiatives, Saha also announced plans to construct four flyovers in Agartala to alleviate traffic congestion.
