Tripura: Cong alleges State Election Commission failing to handle violence caused by BJP

First Published: 5th April, 2024 13:52 IST

Despite filing complaints with both the state Election Commission and Returning Officers, Congress leaders lamented the lack of response or action against the perpetrators.

The opposition Congress has launched a scathing attack on the State Election Commission, alleging that the election watchdog has failed to address the “rampant vandalism” of its election campaign materials by members of the ruling BJP party.

Congress leaders have accused the Commission of overlooking multiple incidents of banner and festoon destruction, a clear violation of election guidelines, and have demanded immediate action.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Pradesh Congress headquarters in Agartala, AICC national secretary and Tripura in-charge Szarita Laitphlang highlighted instances of banners and festoons being forcibly removed and replaced with those of the ruling BJP in more than five locations across the state, including the state capital Agartala.

She said, “Despite lodging multiple complaints with both the state Election Commission and Returning Officers, we have not received any response or action against the perpetrators yet.”

“The only response we have received is that they are looking into the matters,” she added.

Tripura has two Parliamentary seats- Tripura East and Tripura West.

Rajya Sabha MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb of BJP is contesting from Tripura West seat against Congress state president Ashis Kumar Saha.

While, in the Tripura East seat, BJP’s Kriti Singh Debbarma, who is the sister of Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma is up against CPM leader Rajendra Reang.

By-poll to the Ramnagar assembly constituency and voting for the Tripura West seat will be held on April 19, while voting in the Tripura East seat will be held on April 26.

The counting of votes will be held on June 4.
