Tripura CM Criticizes Opposition for Politicizing Police

First Published: 30th September, 2024 20:43 IST

Tripura CM dismissed Opposition claims of lawlessness, praising the police for improved safety and anti-drug efforts.

As Opposition parties, CPIM and Congress, intensify their attacks on the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to maintain law and order in Tripura, Chief Minister Manik Saha hit back on Monday. Speaking at a media briefing alongside Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan, Saha firmly rejected these claims.

Addressing the press at the police headquarters, the CM highlighted significant improvements in law and order under his leadership compared to previous governments. The briefing followed a key review meeting on the state’s security situation, attended by top police officials, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, and Home Secretary P.K. Chakrabarty.

Chief Minister emphasized that his government has granted full autonomy to the police, unlike previous administrations where, according to him, the police were used as “political tools.”

“We’ve given the police a free hand to act against criminals. There will be no compromise. Lawbreakers will face the consequences,” CM declared.

He also pointed to efforts to clear pending cases at police stations, assuring victims and their families that justice would be delivered promptly.

Saha further praised the police for their role in anti-drug operations. While acknowledging that Tripura had become a corridor for drug trafficking, he expressed concern that many offenders, arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, were being released due to legal loopholes.

He urged the police to work closely with public prosecutors to ensure stronger cases and proper filing of charge sheets, leading to more convictions.

“I have advised the police to enhance their collaboration with public prosecutors to prevent criminals from escaping justice due to technicalities Manik Saha added.

DGP Amitabh Ranjan also addressed the media, stating that the law and order situation in Tripura has significantly improved, especially when compared to previous administrations. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
