Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Assam tomorrow on his 30th visit to the Northeast to dedicate to the nation, the country’s longest 5km long road-cum-rail bridge over the Brahmaputra.

The stage is all set for inauguration of the longest road-cum-rail bridge in India. The Bogibeel bridge is the second longest bridge in Asia which has been built at a cost of Rs 5,900 crore.

It is a project of great strategic significance from the defence perspective as it would drastically cut down the time taken for the movement of military troops and hardware to the frontier areas of Arunachal Pradesh along the India-China border.

The inauguration of the bridge coincides with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 94th birth anniversary.

It took as many as 21 years to complete the project, construction for which started back in 2002. It may be mentioned here that the foundation stone for the project was laid in 1997.

The Bogibeel bridge is a double decker bridge with a two line rail track on lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck.

Once inaugurated, the bridge will reduce road travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by 4 hours, while the train travel time between Delhi and Dibrugarh will be cut by three hours.

The bridge is also of extreme strategic importance. Once operational, it will ensure faster movement of troops and even heavy weapon systems to frontier areas along the Indo-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of the Bogibeel Bridge inauguration.

Dibrugarh district has been divided into 15 sectors and around 1500 security personnel have been deployed to thwart any untoward incidents.
