Police action to be taken against all those students staying in hostels even after their terms are over, minister Pegu said condemning the horrific ragging incident in Dibrugarh Univesity
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that SOP would be issued soon for all universities, colleges and hostels of Assam to avoid any criminal or ragging incidents in future in the higher education institutes of the state.
Minister Pegu condemned the brutal ragging in the PNGB hostel of Dibrugarh University and termed it “crime against humanity”.
The Minister said that he has asked the police and the university authorities to take strongest action against the accused.
Henceforth, students will have to take a pledge not to involve in ragging or any indecent activity inside the University, college or hostel premises and anyone found involved in any anti-social activity would be expelled from the educational institute, the minister said speaking exclusively to Wasbir Hussain, Editor-in-Chief Notrtheast Live.
The Minister further said that he has directed all colleges and universities to take action against any unauthorised students or ex-students living in the hostels. “I have asked police to be contacted and police action will be initiated against all such students who are staying in the hostels even after their terms have finished,” the minister said.
The minister’s reaction comes in the backdrop of a Dibrugarh University student, Anand Sharma being ragged brutally forcing him to jump off the second floor of the PNGB hostel on November 26 night. Anand is now battling for his life in ICU. He is a first semester M. Com student in the university supposed to be prestigious university of Assam.
Earlier in a tweet, minister Pegu had asked the universities to be “vigilant” regarding any ragging incident and take prompt action.
This is not the first time a case of ragging has been reported from Dibrugarh University.
In March 2022, two students – Rituparna Das, a 5th semester student of department of Mechanical Engineering, and Kingku Saikia, another 5th semester student of department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of the Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology (DUIET) were rusticated for ragging juniors.
