Assam music composer Jatin Sharma has slammed the selection committee as well as jury members for the goof-up
The prestigious Assam State Film Awards has been marred with controversy after playback singer Nahid Afrin was conferred the best playback singer award for a song that she did not sing.
The song ‘Neelate Luka Bhaku’ from the movie ‘Nijaanor Gaan’ for which Nahid Afrin was awarded has been originally sung by Rupjyoti Devi and Zubeen Garg. Nahid Afrin had sung a different song titled ‘Natun Ejaak’ for the same film.
The music composer of the film, Jatin Sharma who had done the songs for the film, slammed the selection committee as well as jury members for the goof-up. He also blamed Nahid for accepting the award.
Nahid Afrin, in her defence, said that she was unaware of the mix-up. The jury members never clarified which song the award was for and she never asked because she did sing a song for the movie ‘Nijaanor Gaan’.
Taking to social media, Nahid released a video where she narrated the entire sequence in which she now finds herself embroiled. The singer said that she had received a call from a member of the jury who informed her that she won the award.
However, she did not know for which song she had won the award until she received it.
She termed herself as innocent and asked the people to question the jury and its members who have selected her. She also said that she is ready to return her award.
The development has drawn widespread criticism from netizens as well as political leaders.
Assam cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika said that it’s not the fault of the jury or the government. He blamed the producer or director who wrote the name wrong in the nomination, adding such a mistake should not have happened.
