Sikkim: Govt approves draft notification on banning of plastic bottles, opens it for feedback

The Government of Sikkim has approved the ‘Draft Notification’ banning Plastic Water Bottles. The ban is supposed to come into effect from 1st January 2022. The government took the decision for the protection and conservation of the environment from the harm caused by plastic water bottles.

The draft notification was approved by the state government exercising the power delegated to it under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The State government has also provided an email address for the general public so that people can view the draft and give their comments, suggestions, and objections if any within a period of fifteen days from the date of publication.

Sikkim became the first state in India to ban plastic bags below 50 microns in 1988. In 2016 The state clamped down on thermocol and styrofoam cutlery and plates 2016.
