Dog’s Head Found in a Momo Factory. How Safe is Your Favourite Momo?

The momo factory had been supplying nearly a quintal of momos and spring rolls daily to Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Kalka for the past two years
How safe is your favourite plate of momos? How safe is it to eat outside food? Can we truly trust the food served at our favourite restaurants and street vendors? Are the ingredients fresh, and is hygiene being maintained?
Well, these concerns have become more valid now after authorities in Punjab’s Mohali discovered a severed dog’s head inside the fridge of a momo factory during a municipal raid on Sunday.
The factory, operating illegally out of a residential house in Mattaur, was also found using dirty water and rotten vegetables to prepare momos and spring rolls.
The shocking discovery was part of a two-day crackdown on unhygienic food production.
Acting on complaints from locals, a municipal team raided the facility on Sunday after disturbing videos surfaced online, showing workers handling food in unsanitary conditions.
The momo factory had been supplying nearly a quintal of momos and spring rolls daily to Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Kalka for the past two years.
Authorities were disgusted to find frozen meat of unknown origin, a crusher machine, and used cooking oil on the premises.
Officials also collected samples of momos, spring rolls, and chutney, which have been sent for laboratory testing to determine their safety for consumption.
The crackdown continued on Monday, targeting nearby chicken shops in Mattaur.
The municipal team seized and destroyed nearly 60 kg of foul-smelling frozen chicken, raising further concerns about the quality of meat being sold to unsuspecting customers.
The Mystery Behind the Severed Dog’s Head in Momo Factory Fridge
When officials opened the fridge and found what appeared to be the severed head of a dog.
Shocked locals raised concern, shouting ‘billa’ upon the discovery. Authorities were quick to clarify that the head was allegedly meant for consumption by the factory workers, who are of Nepali origin, and was not being used in the preparation of food for sale.
However, the head has been sent to the Veterinary Department for further examination to determine if dog meat had been used in the factory’s products.
The District Health Officer (DHO) inspected two sites linked to the case, finding multiple violations, including the use of unhygienic ingredients and the lack of proper registration for the vendors operating the factory.
Officials have recommended strict legal action against the factory owner and those running the business.
Speaking on the case, Mohali Civil Surgeon Dr. Sangita Jaina confirmed that reports have been sent to the Deputy Commissioner and the police.
“Once the written report is submitted, necessary legal steps will be taken,” she assured.
Assistant Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Amrit Warring also stated that the police had been informed and further action would depend on the results of the food lab tests.
This incident raises serious questions about food safety standards and regulatory enforcement. How many such unhygienic and unregulated establishments are operating under the radar? As consumers, we must remain vigilant and demand stricter checks to ensure that the food we eat is safe, hygienic, and free from such horrifying violations.
