Pilot Forgets Passport: A United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai had to make an unexpected diversion after the pilot realised mid-air that he had forgotten the passport.

The flight, carrying 257 passengers, took off from Los Angeles International Airport at 2 pm local time on March 22. However, about two hours into the journey, the pilot discovered he did not have his passport. As a result, the plane made a U-turn and landed at San Francisco International Airport at around 5 pm, reports India Today.

United Airlines arranged for a new crew to operate the flight. A separate flight departed from San Francisco to Shanghai at 9 pm and reached its destination at around 1 am local time after a journey of more than 12 hours.

In a statement issued to The Independent, a spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed that the flight had to return because the pilot did not have his passport.

Pilot Forgets Passport

“On Saturday, United flight 198 from Los Angeles to Shanghai landed at San Francisco International Airport as the pilot did not have their passport onboard. We arranged for a new crew to take our customers to their destination that evening. Customers were provided with meal vouchers and compensation,” the statement read.

During the delay, the airline informed passengers about the diversion through a message that read: “Your flight diverted to San Francisco due to an unexpected crew-related issue requiring a new crew. Once they arrive, we’ll get you back on your way to Shanghai as soon as possible. We sincerely apologise for this disruption and appreciate your patience.”

Upon arrival in San Francisco, passengers received a $15 meal voucher as compensation for the delay.
