Sikkim: Bharat Basnett CAP’s new president

Basnet replaces incumbent party president LP Kafley

In a major political development ahead of the Assembly elections in Sikkim, veteran politician Bharat Basnett has been appointed as the new president of the Citizen Action Party (CAP) today.

The decision was taken during the 5th Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting of the party at the party head-office, Adampool near Gangtok.

Basnet replaces incumbent party president LP Kafley.

As per party sources, Kafley has voluntarily stepped down from the president’s post.

Basnet, the former president of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee had joined CAP Sikkim on January 2 during the party’s programme at Pakyong ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

Hailing from Ranipol, Gangtok, Basnet joined politics between 1985-86.

In 2009 assembly election, he contested from Arithang constituency on Congress ticket, however he lost.

He had also contested in Lok Sabha elections 2019, but was unsuccessful, and he resigned from Congress later in 2020.

He was also the former president of Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj (SNS), a non-political pressure group.
