Shortage of LPG cylinders in Sikkim: Govt holds emergency meet

First Published: 2nd November, 2023 9:28 IST

In the meeting, officials of the Food and Civil Supplies department discussed ways to mitigate the situation

Sikkim is facing a severe crisis of LPG cylinders that has prompted authorities to be more proactive in dealing with the situation. To mitigate the shortage in the state, the Food and Civil Supplies department in Sikkim held an emergency meeting chaired by Secretary Namrata Thapa.

The devastating floods last month had crippled road communication in Sikkim as gushing flood water washed several portions of key roads including the NH-10, the lifeline of Sikkim, as well as bridges which led to difficulty in essentials reaching the state.

To alleviate the problems faced by the people, the department is increasing the fleet of LPG trucks and providing special permits to private distributors. The meeting also discussed promoting the use of lighter and safer 10 kg composite cylinders.

Consumers have been encouraged to switch to these readily available options as the department works to maintain a sufficient LPG supply in the state.

On October 4, the Sikkim government had issued a notification asking all the LPG dealers in the state to maintain adequate stock of LPG cylinders and distribute it in a rational manner.
