Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi.

The decision was taken in Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary board meeting yesterday. Senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Modi, party president Amit Shah met at the party’s New Delhi Headquarters yesterday where the crucial decision was taken.

Modi contested from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and his home state Gujarat’s Vadodara in 2014 and won both of them with a landslide margin.

Other veteran BJP leaders such as Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu and Shivraj Singh Chouhan met yesterday to discuss the election strategy ahead of Lok Sabha polls.

The party is yet to make a formal announcement. It was being speculated that the BJP is considering introducing certain criteria such as the age bar for deciding the candidates.

The Election Commission is yet to announce the dates of the upcoming polls. The polls are likely to be spread over 7-8 phases during April and May.
