The state is preparing to export another 15 MT of fine grain Chakhao to Europe soon
If you love Manipur’s unique aromatic black rice Chakhao and you are living in Kerala, well, worry not. You do not have to travel all the way to Manipur because the Manipur government has already sent 5 metric tonnes (MT) of Chakhao to Kerala yesterday.
The state is preparing to export another 15 MT Chakhao to Europe, said Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
“Manipur has been making significant progress in terms of exporting many local organic products which have a huge demand across the country and abroad. As many as 5 mt of fine grain Chakhao, which is Manipur’s unique aromatic Black Rice, were flagged off to Kerala while preparations are underway for exporting another 15 mt to Europe,” CM N Biren Singh posted on X.
According to reports, the shipment of Chakhao flagged off from Freshies Freshs, Nahakpam Food and Beverages at Chingmeirong by the Agriculture Department and Economic and Resource Development Organisation (ERDO) will reach Organic Foods, Kerala.
“As we fight our badly struck farm economy today we have to regain some of the markets we already had before the present crisis. It is our sole objective to keep a captive economy in our hands as we need a huge cash inflow to compete with developed society. Yesterday we flagged off 5 Mt fine grain Chakhao to Kerala and we are preparing another 15mt to be exported to Europe. PRODUCT PURCHASED and collected by farmer leader Mr Shamusaba mostly from Kumbi and Bishnupur District.” Freshies Freshs posted on Facebook.
Black rice grown in Manipur is known for its unique aroma and is traditionally used to make the Chakhao kheer (black rice pudding or payasam). Now Indian restaurants are using it to create risotto dishes, puddings, salads, and ice-creams.
It has received the geographical indication (GI) tag in May 2020.
Black rice is known for its high nutritional content, especially anthocyanin, which, incidentally, also gives a deep dark hue to the rice. Being rich in vitamins, and minerals without having gluten content made it popular among the fitness enthusiasts of India and abroad.
